MIDWIVES REQUIRED IN AUSTRALIA

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing a high standard of evidence based midwifery care to women of varying ages & cultural groups within the Hospital / facility.

The Registered Midwife (RM) will work in partnership with the woman to give the necessary support, care and advice whilst respecting individual spiritual and cultural beliefs during pregnancy, labour and the post partum period, will conduct births and to provide care for the newborn / infant.
The RM will plan, assess, implement and evaluate midwifery care in collaboration with women, their families and the multidisciplinary team so as to achieve identified goals and health outcomes. The RM will work as part of the health care team, adhere to company and site policies and procedures, contribute to the efficient, effective, and economic running of the unit /ward, participate in working parties or committees (as required) demonstrate a commitment to Continuous Quality Improvement, Occupational Health and Safety, achievement of hospital / facility accreditation and deliver a high standard of Customer service at all times.

Duties include:
* Provide ‘hands-on’ midwifery care by carrying out a comprehensive assessment of the woman and her baby and acts upon assessment evidence accordingly and timely
* Perform midwifery nursing care interventions based on evidence-based practice and assists the woman to identify and plan her preferred pathway of care, identifies priorities and evaluates against established goals. Redirects plan as required
* Undertake assessments using a range of assessment tools (i.e. observation, interview, physical examination)
* Respond effectively to emergency situations and the changing status of the woman and infant, maintain close contact with the patient’s treating Obstetrician and Paediatrician
* Proactively promotes breastfeeding, reflecting on the ‘WHO/UNICEF Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding’, however will respect a woman’s individual choice in infant feeding
* Maintains up to date knowledge about pharmacological substances commonly used in midwifery practice, medications that are safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Advises the woman accordingly
* Document into the patients medical record objectively, clearly, concisely and timely using accepted abbreviations and terminology
* Proactively work towards discharge planning, ensuring appropriate referrals for support post discharge to external agencies are in place and meet the requirements of the woman, infant and family
* Delegate aspects of care to ENs and AINs according to their skill level and competence
* Provides education to the woman on self post delivery and care of the infant.
* Ensure relevant vaccinations and ordered tests are performed on the infant prior to discharge.
* Works in partnership with the paediatrician towards ensuring the infant is ready for discharge
* Discharge woman / infant timely
* Encourage the woman, relatives and significant others to participate in the care of the woman / infant as relevant
* Ensure patient confidentiality and privacy is maintained.
* Assist medical and allied health teams in monitoring patient outcomes.
* Undertakes discharge planning and referrals to appropriate community support agencies during pregnancy and following birth
* Provides emotional support and referral to appropriate agencies to assist the woman manage grief if required
* Provide midwifery care in accordance with legislation and common law governing midwifery nursing practice in Australia and relevant state legislation

Mandatory Qualifications include:
* Registered as a Midwife with the Nurses Board relevant to the state of employment
* Current practicing certificate

Desirable but not essential:

* Certificate of training as a Registered Nurse
* Bachelor of Science (Nursing)
* Post graduate qualification in Midwifery or undergraduate qualification in midwifery
* 12 months experience in an accredited post-graduate midwifery-nursing program or be prepared to undertake a Midwifery Graduate training program.
