Objectives
•To work under the guidance of the centre manager/ deputy manager
•To ensure that the needs of the young person are met on a daily basis and that the therapeutic philosophy, policies and procedures of the centre are implemented
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Taking professional responsibility for the development and maintenance of a stable, child-centred environment within the centre
• Participating with the young people in all activities in the centre in a manner that is sensitive to the individual needs of each young person
• Acting as a full member of the staff team and the multi-disciplinary team. This involves active co-operation with all other staff in providing therapeutic residential child care to the young people in care in the centre
• Acting as a key worker to the individual young person, as agreed with the manager/ deputy manager and the child care staff group. It is the particular responsibility of the key workers to look after the needs of the young people assigned to them in accordance with the young person’s Care Plan
• Writing contemporaneously all records that are required within the centre
• Maintaining appropriate links with the parents and families of the young people in care and providing support and intervention when deemed necessary
• Assisting the centre manager/ deputy manager and staff team with pre-admission procedures as required
• Taking responsibility at all times for protecting confidentiality in all areas of the young person’s life
• Participating in the preparation of Care Plans as appropriate
• Attending and participating in Care Plan Reviews for the young people assigned to them in their role as key worker
• Assisting the centre manager/ deputy manager and members of the multi-disciplinary team with the design and implementation of individual programmes for each young person in care
• Liaising with the schools attended by the young people in the centre
• Taking professional responsibility for the safe and appropriate management of challenging behaviours of the young people.
• Participating in staff meetings, training programmes and professional supervision
• To act at all times in the best interests of the young people in care in the centre and to bring to the attention of the centre manager/ deputy manager any matters that are prejudicial to the welfare of the young people
• Any other duties that may be assigned by the Directors, Brandon Residential Services, or his/her designated officer from time to time
Qualifications and Knowledge
Candidates must have a minimum of one the following qualifications:
• National Diploma in Child Care
• National Diploma in Applied Social Care Studies
• Diploma in Social Care
• Diploma in Applied Social Studies/Social Care
• Professional Qualification in Nursing/Disability Nursing
• Open Training College National Diploma in Applied Social Studies (Disability)
Knowledge and Professional Knowledge
• Legislation in Child Care
• Children First Guidelines and Duty to Care
• Knowledge of standards and guidelines in Residential Care
